How do you know if your eggs are bad?

As temperatures rise, foods tend to get bad faster.

If you want to know  if the eggs you’ve had in the fridge for a while are still okay to eat,  look at these tips to find out if they are still edible.

Eggs deserve special attention,  because if you eat them when they are bad, you can easily get sick from it.

So it is important to make sure that they are in the best condition before eating them.

How can I check if my eggs are bad?

There are a few methods to check if your eggs are still good or if it is best to throw them out. For example, if you shake the egg and can hear the egg yolk pounding against the inside of the shell, then it is still a good egg.

Here are some other methods.

Put the egg in water

Eggs in a jug of water

The first thing you need to do is put the egg in a container filled with water, preferably a transparent container so you can more easily see what is happening.

Keep an eye on the following:

  • If the egg quickly sinks and stays on the bottom in a horizontal position, the  egg is still fresh.
  • If it sinks slowly and stays on the bottom in a diagonal or standing position, then the egg is not fresh.

You can think of it this way: The larger the angle, the older the egg.

  • If the egg does not sink to the bottom and instead  floats in the middle, then it is a sign that it has become bad  and should not be eaten.
  • If you see that the egg is floating on the surface of the water, then that means it is really bad.

The egg floats due to the gases that the natural material produces when it decomposes. And as we said, the egg has exceeded the limit where it can be eaten.

The cooking test can show you if your eggs are bad

Eggs being boiled
  • If you boil the egg, cut it in half and see that the  egg yolk is in the middle and there is a small space filled with air,  the egg can still be eaten.
  • But if the egg yolk is closer to the shell and there is more air in it, the egg has become bad.

Crush the egg to see if it is still good.

Another easy method to check if your eggs are still good or not is by crushing it raw on a plate.

  • If you see that the  egg does not spread very much and the egg yolk remains intact,  then the egg is fresh.
  • If, on the other hand, you see that the egg white and the egg yolk are spreading all over the plate and the egg yolk is completely destroyed, then the egg is bad.

Look for an expiration date to see if your eggs are bad

Something to keep in mind is the time when the hen laid the egg. This is known as “week 0”. From week 3 onwards, the egg should not be sold.

Many eggs often start to get bad in week 4.

From then on, they begin to lose their organoleptic properties. In particular, keep an eye on your eggs week 6 onwards.

Also, be sure to store them in their original tray and always in a cool, dry place.

They can last for up to three weeks.

If you are cooking the eggs,  store any leftovers in the fridge  in an airtight container. They can be eaten for up to 3 or 4 days after, if stored this way. However, it is always a good idea to check that they still smell fresh.

Remember that foods stay for a shorter time if it is hot outside. Therefore, it is good to check your eggs more often in the summer .
